Raising Dragons
By: Jerdine Nolen
Illustrated By: Elise Primavera
Is a very imaginative and cheerful story to read! This story focuses on Ma and Pa daughter who found a huge egg when walking. Instead of following her father’s instructions to stay away from it, she went back to where the egg was and saw a baby dragon! Throughout the rest of the book we see the strong bond of friendship between the dragon, Hank; and her. Hank was very helpful around the farm but needed to go live with other dragons! After their emotional goodbye we see that Hank dropped off more eggs for her to train!
Opinion: Very Cute! Illustrations were a great fit for this text!
Classroom Application: This book is not only a good way to introduce this genre but, it also could serve as the basis for students writing. After reading this book to the class, I would have ask students to write a story give this prompt: Similar to the daughter story - You are on a walk before supper on a Sunday and come across a huge egg that is starting to hatch... Leaving the prompt here readers can compile there thoughts and be creativity!
